Cowhide is great for its amazing texture, durability, and its ability to mix well with a large range of patterns and styles. A word of warning: unless you're going for a western ski lodge look, it's best left in small doses. Think one or two pieces per room.

As temperatures dip around the country, you may be paying a little more attention to your mantel — whether or not your fireplace underneath can light a fire is another matter. My favorite look is a symmetrical one like Ashley Whittaker's, pictured above. When in doubt, you really can't go wrong with simple symmetry and I'm always a sucker for a blue room.
